SHEONE SOLO SHOW ‘BLACKATELIER’ OPENING 26TH OCT @ ART-EL GALLERY

After a decade of traveling the globe, taking in New York, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong, the Gambia and many points in between, SheOne brings his signature bold expressive strokes and highly personalised abstract over-spray to Art-el Gallery in Bristol.

Opening at 6pm on the 26th October and entitled ‘Blackatelier’, the exhibition will feature a collection of brand new works and installation pieces created whilst in residency at the gallery.  The work reflects on his expansive history of mark making that is deep rooted in the era of New York subway graffiti.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I discovered graffiti as a fully formed art culture, I took the idea of spray-painting a name and have been abstracting that concept ever since.

The new works are the latest entries in an aesthetic journal, information mapped out in a stylised argot, gathered from the immediacy of site specific painting in the abandoned edges and questioning the transient nature of public art.

In graffiti you have to be prepared to walk away from your works.  It is a one shot deal, whether it’s a rooftop in the Bronx or an abandoned farmhouse on a Sardinian hillside, you will never personally see the work again.  What is important is committing to a moment and the experience of making the works.

This latest show captures fragments of these journeys, externalised private moments, experience translated into permenance.

Blackatelier is wherever I am working, an ambient studio where internal impulses can be realised, a sloganised output made physical with spraypaint.

Please come and join us for what will be Art-el’s final exhibition of 2012.  It’s been a great year and we’ve hosted some amazing show’s with some super talented artists, including Mark Lyken, Ermsone and Pinky.  The remaining work from these shows can still be purchased through the Art-el website.

Remember What You Stand For opens 2nd August @ Art-el Gallery

Art-el Gallery is proud to present ‘Remember what you Stand For’, an exhibition of new paintings and drawings from Brighton based artist and illustrator, Pinky.

The exhibition opens on Thursday 2nd August at 6pm and runs until the 31st August.  The work, including a new screenprint produced for the show, will also be available on the Art-el website following the opening of the exhibition.

College Boutique Launch Event

The new College Boutique is having a Launch Party on Friday the 13th from 4.30pm-8pm and you are invited to join them.

There will be children’s activities in the afternoon 4.30pm-6pm and drinks from 6pm onwards.

The College Boutique showcases the talents of The College Project residents and friends. From custom handmade clothing, stone sculpture, jewellery, paintings, original prints, hand knitted goods, metalwork plus much much more…

The boutique is open Thursday to Fridays 11:30am to 5:30pm and Saturday 12:00pm to 4:30pm at The College Project, Marksbury Road, Bedminster, Bristol, BS3 5JJ.

Bristol Biennial @ The College

The College threw open it’s doors on Friday night as part of the Bristol Biennial (1st – 16th June).

It was a hugely busy and succesful night attracting artists and the local community who took great pleasure in the vast array of art work and creativeness that was on offer, enjoyed walking the art and sculpture trail and then relaxed to the sounds of Yaffle and Insomniac Jack.

This work can continue to be seen throughout the 16 days of the Biennial, but in order to take in the whole event it is best to save your visit for a Thursday, Friday or Saturday as this is when Art-el Gallery and Kathy Hindes, 1000 birds sound and visual installation are also available to view.

Here is a little run thorugh & visual sample of what you can expect to see.

In the main exhibition space there is a group exhibition of work from from the amazing and talented residents of the college, including sculpture by Pete Mountain, Matthew Billington and Lillith C Green life drawing by Colin Stevens (who also runs classes at the college), photography by Joe Clarke & Ashley Clarke and Stefanie Dring and painting by Kerry Day.

In addition there is a solo photography exhibition by Matt Smith (Mattko), 30 photographs both digital and exposed print each telling it’s own story called ….

Open Thursday & Friday 11:30 to 17:30 and Saturday 12:00 to 16:30 is a sound and visual installation by Kathy Hinde and Matthew Fairclough.  Many of the 1000 paper cranes used in this exhibit have been made by the local community.

EVERYTHING BEGINS WITH AN E

Art-el Gallery is delighted to announce‘Everything Begins With An E’, a new body of work from the Graffiti writer and illustrator Erms.  UK born but now based in Paris, he continues to be active in the Parisian graffiti scene.

Taking diverse influence from classical New York and European graffiti, renaissance art through to pop art, traditional graphic design and illustration, the 80s Hip Hop movement and beyond. Erms takes us on a unique aesthetic exploration of the alphabet, of complex patterns, grids and graphic style.

The title for the show is inspired by the famous rave track of the same name. It also plays with the first letter of the artists moniker as well as having intrinsic links to the rave scene.

The theme highlights the dangers of both of these pursuits that become all consuming, and when taken to the extreme, the darker elements begin to appear…

BRISTOL BIENNIAL @ THE COLLEGE PROJECT

Happening alongside this, in conjunction with The College Project will be the opening off the Bristol Biennial with an explosive multi-media event showcasing an array of visual art by the college creative’s, including an art and sculpture trial, live music and refreshments throughout the evening.   You will be blown away by the transformation of the old City of Bristol College, now a thriving artistic community in the midst of beautiful gardens.

The theme for this year’s Bristol Biennial is Storytelling, inviting participants to interpret the theme through visual arts, film and theatre. Storytelling exists in all facets of life: we tell stories and anecdotes to engage others and break down isolating barriers between individuals or groups. Storytelling can enrich our lives, it can be cathartic, it can impart wisdom or illustrate values and customs.

Photographer Matthew Smith (Mattko) has been invited to showcase his vast body of work.Mattko has spent the last 20 years documenting social movements in the UK.

Alongside the exhibitions, there will be an outdoor art and sculpture trail from the College Project artist studio and workshop residents.

Keep an eye out for the Immersive video, sound & sculptural installation By workshop resident Kathy Hinde & Matthew Fairclough called ‘A Thousand Birds’. This work has been partly created by the wider community, who have been creating origami cranes for it. You can still participate if you follow the instructions on this video.

The installation will be open for viewing at the at the same time as the gallery.  Other work will be available to view throughout the duration of the Bristol Biennial, 1st to 16th June.

There will also be live performance on the evening of the 1st from musicians Yaffle (Benita Johnson & Helen Gregory) and Insomniac Jack and a circus performance in ‘The House of Curious Engagements’.

Lyken Pattern Interrupt – 2 more days

Hey folks there are only 2 days left to come and view Mark Lyken’s ‘Pattern Interrupt’ solo show at The Art-el Gallery.  Beautiful original canvases adorn the walls and hang from the ceiling, coloured cords split the room and head off on a journey outside and the installation is hex – ellant!

But don’t take our word for it, drop by and see for yourself.  Open Thursday and Friday 11.30am to 5.30pm.

Come to the College and get inspired by making an origami crane which will be included in this brilliant installation.

The amazing work of Kathy Hinde & Matthew Fairclough will be on display at The College as part of the Bristol Biennial. This is a completely interactive project which relies on the local community and people far and wide contributing an origami crane which will form the main body of their installation.
