Without You Baby There Ain’t No Us

June 10, 2009 by artelgallery

logo_banner_600px

There is a great project taking place at the Scope Art Fair in Basel this week.

Without You Baby There Ain’t No Us, is a project from Swiss Artists Admir Jahic and Comenius Roethlisberger (The Invisible Heroes). The project has been exhibited in NY, Miami, Kuwait and following Basel, shows are scheduled for Paris, Hamburg and LA before the end of the year. Each exhibition employs a different research and selection criteria.

At the Scope Art Fair, the pair speaks of crisis by referring to passion and absurd commitment to a joyous idea, by recreating 604 rendered frames from the video Star Wars kid, which has experienced more than 13 million views on YouTube. All 604 will be on display at the Scope Art Fair in Basel as of Monday June 8th, 2009.

Project Details:

In an attempt to disrupt the haphazard collection of archived videos that YouTube has become, artist duo Comenius Roethlisberger and Admir Jahic transformed the visual (and virtual) language of “broadcasting” into a physical medium by producing illustrations on heavy handmade paper and recreating virtual references by allowing elemental art materials to do what they do best and add to the confusion.

Each drawing is 21 inches x 31 inches / 56cm x 76cm and based on a rendered freeze-frame, complete with video title, user ratings and number of views.

The resulting collection is both distressing and humorous in its ability to highlight our often vulgar predilections.

A WORD FROM CLEAN

April 9, 2009 by artelgallery

SARAH COCKINGS AND ALICE HODGE (aka CLEAN) WOULD LIKE TO CLEAN A FEW THINGS UP!

Sorry your homework has lead you up the garden path ….. We are not associated with the group THE CLEAN COLLECTIVE who caused the damage to Banksy’s work.

The confusion has arisen from the ‘Appropriate Media’ website being registered to The Clean Collective….

We (Alice Hodge and Sarah Cockings) are a collective called simply …. ‘CLEAN’

Thank you for taking such an interest in our work however we are not in anyway connected to the self proclaimed culprits ‘Appropriate Media’.

MILD MILD WEST DEFACED

April 7, 2009 by artelgallery

MILD MILD WEST DEFACEMENT
“Over the last 24 hours a huge storm has blown up in Bristol over the (attempted) defacing of Banksy’s infamous ‘Mild Mild West’ piece on Stokes Croft by a group calling themselves Appropriate Media. Internet chat on local graffiti forums suggests that The Clean Collective (whose work we sell) are somehow linked to this action; an allegation that we are looking into. It seems unlikely, however, that there is any connection between the two groups, not least because the two individuals alleged to be involved are currently not even in the UK. Furthermore it would be extremely odd if The Clean Collective shared the same vehemently anti-graffiti ethos as Appropriate Media, in light of their links with us and – by implication – our roster of street artists. We will keep you posted with any further developments as they occur.”

CRIMES OF PASSION

March 17, 2009 by artelgallery

If you only get to one exhibition this year, make it this one at the Royal West Of England Academy in Bristol, a major show of new work by the city’s best known and most successful graffiti and street artists and is the first show of its kind in the city since the Arnolfini’s groundbreaking 1985 show, Graffiti Art.

Celebrating Bristols rich and diverse contemporary scene, which has nurtured many of the UK’s most successful graffiti and street artists, including 3D, Inkie, Banksy, Nick Walker, Sickboy and TCF Crew, and continues to be a breeding ground for a wealth of exceptional creative talent.

We have been lucky enough to have visited the venue to watch the work being thrown up and it is going to be a killer of a show. It opens on Friday night and and is open for 6 weeks so get along.

69 Show Opens

March 11, 2009 by artelgallery

The hard work paid off. After another frantic day of hanging the doors have finally opened to Bristol’s newest Gallery.

The art and the space were very well received and the venue was busy all evening, music played and beer flowed. In neighbouring units there were cyclists, live art and a burlesque fan dancer so plenty for all too see.

The show is open for the next 6 weeks so if you couldn’t make it last night there is still a chance to catch the show at 131-133 Wilder Street, St Pauls, Bristol open Wednesday – Saturday 11am to 7pm and Sunday 11am – 4 pm.

A big thanks to everybody that worked so hard in making this show possible, all the artists, Paul, Anabel, Sean Phil, Sam, Damian, Red Bull and to everybody that showed up and those that plan to.
