Mark Lyken – The Lonliness Machines

March 5, 2012

For his first solo show Mark Lyken worked intensely to create a series of original paintings, a mural and a piece of music that explored his own and other’s feelings on our growing reliance and usage of social media websites, here are a selection of photographs from the opening night on the 10th February 2012.

MARK LYKEN SOLO SHOW OPENING – “THE LONELINESS MACHINES”

Throughout January Mark Lyken, has been Resident at Recoat Gallery, creating an installation & a series of original paintings for his solo exhibition.

The show will consist of a series of new works which he describes as “Abstract Meditations on the Digital World.”

As our interactions and communications become progressively more mediated and facilitated by technology, our connections to one another seem increasingly fragile. As we become increasingly connected through personal technology and social networks are we becoming alienated from each other and ourselves?

He will create a mural in the space and compose a piece of music that will be available for free download from Gamma Proforma from the opening onwards ( www.gammaproforma.com/lonelinessmachines ).

The exhibition will open 7-10pm on 10th February and runs 12-6pm Tues to Sun until 4th March.

Exploring duality in Art & Music, Gamma Proforma’s GP2011 events feature three distinct UK artists with a common thread, they operate on Dual Channels. Three events at XOYO London during August/September 2011. Each event launches a set of Giclee prints and a soundtrack album by the featured artist. The artists will be in attendance and will perform works at the events. The first 30 attendees at each event will receive a limited edition artist’s pack that includes a signed Giclee print and hand made soundtrack. Support from DJ’s Noel Watson & Nate Thompson plus guests.

Part 2. The Art & Sounds of Lyken

Lyken’s layered & gestural work captures turbulent events & cycles along the timeline of a living cosmos. These are worlds within worlds, chemical universes revealed at a microscopic level. His music reflects this same detail, decayed sounds and transmissions shimmer in space, a melodic sea of scientific musical patterns that chime with that certain universal emotion.

Rudimentary Perfection – Recoat Gallery, Glasow 01/07/11

June 27, 2011

Scotland’s Recoat Gallery, Glasgow hosts the UK’s first comprehensive “Graffuturism” Exhibition titled “Rudimentary Perfection”.  Mark Lyken has curated an exhibition that pulls together an impressive group of notable international artists linked by their innovative spirit & shared graffiti heritage.

Each of these artists has ventured down unique paths in their post graffiti output & each offers a radical take on expressive, figurative & letter-based abstraction. These works, while differing in approach & execution retain the sense of movement, assured marks & imperfect beauty of graffiti itself.

The participating artists include SheOne, Duncan Jago, Jaybo Monk, Matt W. Moore, Augustine Kofie, Nawer, Morten Andersen, Poesia, Derm and Mark Lyken.

Opening Night. Fri 1st July. 7-10pm
Show runs from 2nd to the 31st July 2011.
