Co-LAB – officially open

March 17, 2013

Wow what a great day it was yesterday.

The one thing that we didn’t think would be working in time was the wonderful coffee machine, so when on Saturday morning the Co-LAB shop slowly filled with the aroma of ground coffee beans everybody breathed a sigh of relief and smiles filled faces.

The shop was busy all day and filled with great tunes as the DJ line up took turns at the decks.

A huge thanks to everybody who mucked in to make this happen (and happen on schedule), to all those that made the effort to put your head through the doors yesterday (and hopefully in the days, weeks, and months to come), to the artists who made those extra special touches, to the DJ’s for banging out da tunes, to all those who helped get Co-LAB out there re-blogging, sharing and re-tweeting and of course to Ujima Radio’s Mistri, although if you weren’t listening I can’t tell you why! (98FM)

Co-LAB is now open everyday at 2-4 Fairfax Street, Bristol, BS1 3DB – Monday – Saturday 10am – 6pm and Sundays 11am – 5pm.

The making of Mark Lyken Solo Exhibition ‘Pattern Interrupt’ 4th May 2012

June 5, 2012

It’s out with the old and in with the old at Art-el Gallery.

Erms solo show ‘Everything Begins With An E’ opened with a bang on Friday evening, after a busy and tiring week putting it up – more to come about that soon.

Pattern Interrupt, Mark Lyken’s solo show is down and has left the gallery, and the event seems like such a long time ago now. That said the show will live on in our hearts and of course on the internet! Lets take a little look back and how it all began.

Thanks to Mark for having the faith and for agreeing to put on Art-el first solo show, all who help out putting the show up and all those who came to view and of course thanks to Joe Clarke for an amazing momento of the achievement in the form of this short film.

Work from the show is now available on line at Art-el Gallery.

Team Recoat visit Art-el @ The College

May 7, 2012

The lovely people of The Recoat Gallery in Glasgow made the trek down this weekend to take in the Mark Lyken opening on Friday night.

They intended to paint at The College on Saturday, but just ended up chilling in the gallery for most of the day and it was really nice for us to have a chat and get to know them.

However they did drop by again yesterday before they headed back and dropped a couple of pieces.

A huge thanks to you both for coming down, looking forward to the next hook up. xx

Mark Lyken – Pattern Interrupt

May 6, 2012

We at Art-el have a really good week.

The coming together and opening night of the Pattern Interrupt show has been an absolute blast and has resulted in a what we think is an amazing show, so our thanks and congratulations to Mark Lyken for setting the standards so high with what is Art-el’s first solo show. Feed back has been great and we are over the moon, thanks to everybody who came to see the show this weekend especially the Glasgow crew and Recoat Gallery’s Ali and Amy, who it’s been really good to spend some time with.

All have departed Bristol now and we do genuinely feel a little heavy hearted.

The show is of course on until the 25th May (Thursday & Friday 11.30am to 5.30pm & Saturday 12.00pm to 4.30pm), so if you didn’t make it down this weekend then please do stop by as it really is worth taking in.

The work from the show is now also available to buy on-line here - http://www.art-el.co.uk/collections/mark-lyken

Here of a few shots of the show at it’s various stages.

There will be plenty more photos to come as Joe Clarke, a photographer who has a studio at The College Project has documentated the whole process with still photography and film, he’s off editing those as we speak and we can’t wait to see and share them, thanks again Joe.  http://www.joe-clarke.com

MARK LYKEN – PATTERN INTERRUPT – SOLO SHOW OPENS TONIGHT

May 4, 2012

It’s been a surprisingly calm couple of days at Art-el Gallery this week (although in general gallery tradition there will be something that crops up at 5.50pm that sends us all into melt down with 10 minutes to go!)

The show is coming along nicely and is shaping up to be a pretty good one.

The cider arrived from Thatchers yesterday and the guys from the college will be firing up the cob oven to make pizza to sell.

What more could anybody want on a Friday evening?  So pop down down whether it’s for 5 minutes or for the duration to check out this show.  Doors open at 6pm and the evening goes on until 9.30pm.

And if you can’t make it tonight the show is on until the 25th May.

The College, Marksbury Road, Bedminster, Bristol, BS3 5JJ.

Here’s a little taster (without giving too much away).

MARK LYKEN STUDIO PICTURES

April 30, 2012

As his new solo show ‘Pattern Interrupt’ opening approaches, our friends at Recoat Gallery visited Mark Lyken in his Glasgow studio to see how the preparations were going.

Here are some photos they took whilst they were there, you may spot some corners of the new works as you look through them.

<

We are expecting the the new collection of work to arrive on Tuesday, closely followed by Mark himself, who will then be given complete control of the gallery, watch this space for more tit bits as things progress.

MARK LYKEN TASTER

April 26, 2012

Lyken is a Visual Artist & Musician based in Glasgow, Scotland.  He was among the first to write Graffiti in Scotland in the 80s & transition to Gallery work. His paintings toy with scale and time, worlds within worlds, chemical universes at a microscopic level. His music reflects this same detail, decayed sounds and transmissions shimmer in space, a melodic sea of scientific musical patterns that chime with that certain universal emotion.

Growing up, his family moved between Scotland & South Africa, never remaining in one place for longer than a year or two. This resulted in quick adaption to new situations, people and opportunities. He drew endlessly as a child and recorded mock radio shows on his Grandad’s reel-to-reel. At sixteen he asked for a drum machine rather than driving lessons for his birthday.

A restless curiosity means he continues to record, travel & exhibit, applying his abstract style to different surfaces & mediums.  His Debut album “Bit Rot” is out now on Gamma Proforma.

He still can’t drive.

Which means he’ll be getting the train down to Bristol next week in preperation for his new solo show opening at Art-el of Friday 4th May.

Here’s a little taster of what is to come.
